Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health

A Successful Tour in Lebanon

The TM movement in Lebanon organized a  "Maharish Vedic Approach to Health" (Maharishi Ayurveda) tour in Lebanon during October and November 2001. The Maharishi Vaidya, Dr. Suresh Swarnapuri who was invited to Lebanon, did around 60 MVAH consultations, and conducted a course on "Good Health Through Prevention". This 16-hour course includes specific recommendations to help prevent ill health that include daily and seasonal routines, individualized diet, other health-promoting behavior, and development of higher states of consciousness -- all of which bring life increasingly into harmony with Natural Law, the basis of perfect health. What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is the world's most ancient systems of preventive health care. Developed in India over 6,000 years ago.

Ayurveda (which translates as "knowledge of life") is a natural approach to creating balance and strengthening the body's healing abilities.

What is the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Health Program?
Over time and with the foreign domination of India, the comprehensive knowledge of Ayurveda became fragmented and lost. Recently, working together with the foremost Ayurvedic experts in India, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation program (TM), systematized and restored Ayurveda to its purity and completeness in accord with classic Vedic texts. This systemization of Ayurveda is called the Maharishi Ayur-Veda health program.

How does Ayurveda work?
Ayurveda enlivens the inner intelligence of the body and strengthens its natural healing ability. According to Ayurveda disease is primarily the result of imbalances and impurities that accumulate in the body over time. The specialty of Ayurveda is in diagnosing imbalances at an early stage, before symptoms of disease arise, eliminating those imbalances from the body, and teaching each person how to live a healthy, balanced life.

What are mind/body types?
Ayurveda was the first system of medicine to recognize the concept of individual mind/body types. It holds that everyone is born with their own natural balance which influences all aspects of their life, including body structure, emotional makeup, and predisposition to illnesses. Without understanding one's natural balance you may unknowingly create imbalances by following a life-style that strains your mind/body system.

the Center Award offered to Maharishi Vaidya Dr. Suresh Swarnapuri What are doshas?
According to Ayurveda, the body is governed by three fundamental biological principles - called doshas - that control all of the body's functions. These doshas are Vata (regulates movement), Pitta (regulates metabolism) and Kapha (regulates structure). All three doshas work together. One's individual mind/body type is determined by the natural predominance of one or more of these three doshas in the body.

Learn Your Own Body Type
Improve Your Health and Happiness

Human beings come in a remarkable variety of shapes and sizes! Such differences are familiar to all of us and may seem random, but they are actually part of an intelligent pattern. Understanding this pattern is the key to creating and maintaining health happiness and is the basis of world’s most ancient and complete science of health – Maharisahi Ayur-Ved.

Body Types

According to Maharishi Ayur-Ved, all the differences in human physiological characteristics can be reduced to three fundamental principles, which are present in the mind, the body, the foods we eat, and the environment as a whole. The Names for these three principles are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. At any given time, one or two of these principles are usually dominant, and this accounts for varying characteristics or body types for different people.

Body Type Characteristics

Vata is responsible for all movement. The proper balance of Vata creates more energy, alertness, quickness, and creativity. When Vata is out of balance, it can cause anxiety, constipation, high blood pressure, and insomnia.

Pitta is responsible for heat and metabolism. When Pitta is in balance we enjoy good digestion and contentment. Too much Pitta may cause anger, impatience, skin rashes, and ulcers.

Kapha is responsible for structure and solidity. When Kapha is balanced, we have strength, stamina, good immunity, stability, and an even temperament. A Kapha imbalance can cause dullness, depression, excess weight, high cholesterol, and allergies.

Students’ Intelligence and Creativity Improved

By Transcendental Meditation Technique

Findings from Three Randomized Experiments
Reported in the Leading Journal on Intelligence

Research taken from MUM websiteAt a time when U.S. schools make you think of metal detectors, falling test scores and attention deficit disorder, imagine students closing their eyes to meditate for 15 minutes twice daily, and then, as a result, showing more intelligence and creativity, less anxiety, and increased alertness and ability to focus.

An article in the September/October issue of Intelligence reports on three randomized studies that found these results in students who learned the Transcendental Meditation® technique, an age-old practice for developing mental potential.

"We found increases in creativity and intelligence that you don’t typically expect to see," said principal investigator and coauthor So Kam Tim of Hong Kong, who conducted the experiments to earn his doctoral degree in psychology at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa. "Many researchers feel that it’s not possible to significantly improve basic cognitive ability once a person reaches adolescence, but our findings challenge that theory."

Dr. So’s research was designed to determine whether different meditation procedures and rest could affect several types of cognitive processes. "We compared the Transcendental Meditation technique, contemplative meditation and napping, which some believe produce similar effects," said Dr. So. "Our findings showed that these three have significantly different effects on cognitive function."

Significant improvement on seven measures of cognitive function

Dr. So used seven standardized tests to measure a wide range of cognitive, emotional and perceptual functions of 362 students participating in the three studies at schools in Taiwan. In one study, conducted at a private high school, 154 seniors (78 boys, 76 girls) from four classes were randomly assigned to the TM® program or to a napping group. In the second study at a national junior high school, 87 girls were randomized by class to either a TM program group or a no-treatment control group, and were also compared to 41 girls in a third class who learned contemplative meditation from the Chinese tradition. The third study consisted of 99 boys in two classes at a vocational training school who were randomly assigned by class to either a TM program group or no-treatment control.

The results of the three studies, which ranged from six months to one year, showed that taken together the TM program groups had significant improvement on all seven measurements compared to the no-treatment and napping control groups. Contemplative meditation showed a significant result in two categories, and napping had no effect.

Whole-brain functioning

"The TM technique had the unique effect of simultaneously improving all measures, indicating that it integrates many different brain functions," said Dr. So.

The greatest improvement in the TM program groups was seen on a creativity measure called Test for Creative Thinking–Drawing Production. According to its developers, the test measures "whole brain creativity," which requires a balanced use of intellect and feelings.

Improvements in the TM program groups were also found in practical intelligence (Constructive Thinking Inventory), indicating increased nonintellectual abilities, such as optimism and the ability to work with others. Whereas IQ tests predict only academic success, the practical intelligence test predicts success in work, love, and social relationships. However, IQ also increased, as measured by the ability to reason in novel situations, called "fluid intelligence" (Culture Fair Intelligence Test). Increased IQ was also indicated by a purely cognitive measure called Inspection Time. "The Inspection Time result indicates improvement in basic aspects of intelligence, such as alertness and ability to focus, which are essential for learning," explained Dr. So.

Improvements were also found in "field independence," indicating growth in perceptual ability as well as inner-directedness, flexibility in seeing others’ perspectives, and resistance to peer pressure (Group Embedded Figures Test).

Participants in the TM program groups were also significantly less anxious as measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, whereas the contemplation meditation group tended to show an increase on this measurement. Dr. So explained that an anxious mind is typically one that isn’t capable of thinking clearly, so researchers on cognition consider it an important variable to study.

Results expand on studies on brain physiology

"These effects of the Transcendental Meditation program on cognitive processes expand on earlier studies which show how it affects brain physiology," said coauthor Dr. David Orme-Johnson, former chair of the psychology department at Maharishi University of Management, who was Dr. So’s thesis advisor. "Research has found that the TM practice increases blood flow and EEG coherence in the frontal brain areas. This part of the brain integrates intentions, goals and emotions, as well as perceptual, motor and intellectual resources into focused thought and action. So, to see all these abilities increasing in a holistic way now in these studies in Taiwan is a very significant finding."

According to Dr. So, research has found that the Transcendental Meditation technique produces a "wakeful hypometabolic state"—where the body is resting deeply but the mind remains alert. "Scientists report that this is a unique state of mind and body, a fourth major state of consciousness, that’s different from sleeping, dreaming or being awake. It’s a fascinating new area of psychology," said Dr. So.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi calls for Bush's removal

By JO ANN GESNER, Fairfield

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the Transcendental Meditation movement, called for the removal of President Bush during a weekend conference. Maharishi said during his keynote address that Bush's bellicose posture has opened the road to the gates of hell.

Speaking from Holland, Maharishi told conference attendees that many unintelligent people believe in arms. He said Bush's ignorance of science has led him to rashly go out and destroy the world. Maharishi told 300 people attending a Holistic Development Educators' Conference Friday that crime, school violence and terrorism demonstrate that education has failed society. On one side, the Unified Field of knowledge was discovered by modern science. On the other side, it is excluded from daily life and the discovery has lost its purpose. America should realize it's highly dangerous that the scientific knowledge of the Unified Field has been excluded from education. The individual is cosmic and Americans should wake up to the knowledge that education is to unfold- this means unfolding what is latent in the field of total knowledge (the Unified Field).

Maharishi then addressed the terrorism affecting the US, saying "Americans should wake up, to the sense of that every country has a responsibility for every other country. Don't have a second experience of these days (of terrorism). Take a lesson from what you have done. You can destroy and remaining in darkness you will have to reap the results. Life can be lived in peace, happiness - give to the world. Make your administration uplifting."

When asked about the great fear about bio-weapons such as anthrax, Maharishi said any kind of destiny coming to America is as a result of America doing the same thing everywhere. This is initiated by America, and as a result terrorism is coming. More and more Americans are going in that direction, and more of those kind of things will follow. Don't go deeper into the mud. Killing is sin. Don't repeat today, tomorrow. If you have money, promote life. Don't create continuous scenes of Hiroshima or this country will be associated with Hiroshima. You'll be brave by nourishing the world. You're not brave by killing the world. It's not patriotism - it's blind patriotism.

Holistic education is a solution to the creation of a better administration, which is the way of a civilized world, he said. There is a saying in the Rig Veda that management should be organized from the roots of intelligence. "If you don't attend to the root, you don't have flowers or fruits," the solution lies in education unfolding the full potential of the brain. This cosmic value within each individual is both in physics and ingrained in the human physiology. He said MUM and the Maharishi School is creating a good example.

Maharishi also told conference attendees that Yogic Flying is one system that radiates harmony and will produce waves of coherence for the world, preventing the negative tendencies that lead to terrorism and war. He said the principle is to hold a bigger light that will radiate farther away.

"It's a simple message of caution, help and sympathy. The nation is going the wrong way. The educators can change this and enjoy the sympathetic support of all nations in the world."
